How does a job as a locksmith grab you? This particular profession is going through somewhat of a boom at the moment. As a profession it's quite a broad one covering an element of carpentry, metal work and electronics. As a locksmith once said to me, no two locks are the same, even if made by the same company. It's not just locks and keys. The area has expanded greatly recently and a locksmith now needs to be reasonably good at electronics with systems that use retina, fingerprint and even voice recognition top allow entry. Add to that people have become a lot more security conscious recently, it goes some way to explaining the boom in the industry.
Insurance standards are also contributing factor. As criminals get more sophisticated, so do the preventative measures and insurance companies like this new innovations to be applied to any property it is to insure. These days, electronic locks can inform a security monitor, who entered a building, what time they entered, what time they left etc. No wonder locksmiths are now as much electrical engineers.
Qualifications and Training
There are a number courses to take in order to be a locksmith. However, as an industry that is not regulated as such, therefore the courses are not recognised professionally. Having said that, this does not mean they have no value. the courses will give the budding locksmith a broad view of the profession, what tools and equipment are used, what a typical job would entail, the different manufactures of locks and security equipment, etc.
Probably the best way to be a locksmith is to work with a locksmith company who has an opening and will train you and pay you at the same time. This way you can learn all about the industry and gain practical experience along the way.
Personality Requirements
There is absolutely no room for mistakes in this industry. Locks have to be installed correctly considering what might be at stake if a job is done in a sloppy manner. Attention to detail and being methodical in your attitude goes a very long way. Discretion is important as you will more often than not be entering people's homes and bear in mind someone getting locked out of a house is embarrassing for them so a sympathetic ear is also required.
